I’ve read a lot of this author’s books and enjoyed them, but I can honestly say this one was a waste of my time and a precious credit. It just made easy targets of vegans and made a false depiction of what psychologists actually do. There was a lot of negative stereotypes about both vegan food and psychologists in the book which I found unnecessary and cliche (I’m neither a psychologist or a vegan by the way) with the usual references to ‘rabbit food’ and being constantly ‘psychoanalysed’ being boring, predictable and unnecessary, without any meaningful addition to the story. The depiction of Steph’s parents as patronising, vegan psychologists was a bit lame as well. The usual, ‘Someone died and it’s all my fault’ theme when in actuality the death wasn’t even remotely her fault.

Ray’s ‘emotional trauma’ was self indulgent, predictable and boring. Parts of the book dragged on without anything really happening.

I really enjoyed it.The concept of the story is okay, but it’s delivery was pretty dull to be honest. I loved that she brought in characters from other stories she has written. Claire and Lana from ‘Just for Show’, also a fake relationship story, turn up. Rae was a bit of a wounded soul and seeing her respond to Steph was beautiful. Steph was a joker, but underneath, so kind. Jae gives them time to realise that they are both worth loving, to get past things that have been holding them back. It’s slow and sweet as they get to know each other. Can they pull it off without the landlord finding out? When Steph suggests they share and explains the need for a fake relationship Rae agrees. Her need for an apartment close to work is for a different reason, but she’s not about to open up and tell Steph, or anyone else, what that is. Having been injured on duty, her life as a cop had to end and she is trying to just get through each day the best she can. probably sharing the too-high kitchen table with a roommate or spouse. comedy club where Steph has been trying to get a chance to headline.

Rae Coleman is an ex-cop and now works security at a L.A. She has to find someone willing to be her fake girlfriend. She needs an apartment near the comedy clubs and the one she wants won’t rent to roommates or singles. She has decided that it’s time to stop going on the road and concentrate on making it in LA. Stephanie Renshaw is a struggling stand- up comic. She doesn’t put a foot wrong as she tells a beautiful and tender story, with characters I cared for. With ‘The Roommate Arrangement’ Jae has captured my heart yet again.
